The difference between a choice and a decision... Do you know what it is?
Yesterday, I had an intercollegial meeting (also known as coffee time) with fellow coach Kelvin Wolken.
Besides a similar background story and hobby (he, too, played volleyball at a high level), we share many views on personal and professional development.
Somewhere in the middle of our conversation, he casually dropped this gem.
A few words that stuck with me for the rest of the day:
“There’s a difference between a choice and a decision.”
Huh? 🤔
“A decision is always rational and therefore doesn’t come from your authenticity.
First, you make a choice, and then you take the decisions needed to achieve it.”
🤯Wow, that hit home.
Because the message is clear:
1️⃣ Make a choice that aligns with you, your values, what you stand for, and what you want to achieve.
2️⃣ Only then bring in your rational side for all the details: How do you get there? What needs to be done?
What we truly want is so often buried under piles of “yes, buts.”“Too expensive, too far, too difficult…” ❌
Or this classic: “Unrealistic…”
Sure, that’s fine. 🤷♂️
At least it gives you certainty.
Certainty that it’s never going to happen. 👍
If you’re willing to pay that price, be my guest.
But if you’re not?
Maybe it’s time to take action.
Let’s talk.
