This is why veterinarians face high performance pressure.
And it’s not just about our “reptilian brain”… (1/3) 🧠
Veterinary medicine is a field that requires a lot of knowledge.
Just like human medicine and other science-based studies. 📚
This knowledge forms the foundation that ultimately helps you assess:
🔸 Is something wrong here?
🔹 And if yes, what is it?
So we’re constantly looking for a symptom, a diagnosis, or a treatment.
It seems our task is:
➡ Go look for whatever is wrong.
Sound familiar?
Exactly. Our reptilian brain does nothing else.
I’ve covered this extensively in previous posts.
The mindset developed during our studies comes on top of our innate inclination to detect and avoid problems.
In principle, I’m not opposed to problem-solving thinking.
What is difficult, though, is that you can never know everything in medicine.
That’s simply impossible. ❌
Moreover, there’s a reason we talk about a DDx (differential diagnosis)...
Black-and-white certainty doesn’t exist in this profession.
During the veterinary studies, there is increasing attention to this.
This personal aspect is addressed in the Personal and Professional Development curriculum of the Master’s program, where I gladly guide students. 💜
But it’s precisely in professional life that we must remain vigilant and support each other.
Because we, as a community, can have a huge impact.
Follow me in the coming days as I dive deeper into this.
