Performance Pressure (3/3):
Unforeseen Circumstances.
Sometimes things turn out differently.
All the planning, good intentions, and efforts aside.
What do you do then? 🤔
In their 2021 study, organizational psychologists Herberg and Torgersen reflect on various traits and circumstances that have a positive effect on coping with unforeseen situations.
They also combine this with their own research among highly specialized professionals with decades of experience and/or training.
Here are their findings: 📓
It is possible to prepare for unforeseen situations.
For this, the following are important:
🔶 Emotional
🔷 Rational, and
🔶 Interpersonal
…competencies.
Recognizing, regulating, and utilizing EMOTIONS plays a major role in this.
It makes it possible to adapt quickly and not blow the situation out of proportion.
Furthermore, they find that communication skills are crucial.
A social environment where:
🔶 Psychological safety
🔷 Emotional, and
🔶 Moral support
…are present seems essential.
This allows for learning and for adjusting the company based on new information.
Finally:
Experiencing and facing these situations together leads to faster recovery and reduced impact the next time around.
They created the Resilience Competence Face Framework of the Unforeseen, which you can see in the image.
So, how does your clinic measure up?
❌ Not optimal yet and ready for a change?
Let’s schedule a conversation.
